Buffalo Offer - Shawn Bates

The Buffalo Sabres are pleased to announce the offer of a 1 year 0.750M contract to Shawn Bates (C) C

Shawn will be responsible for:
-smart defensive play on the 3rd or 4th line depending on his performance
-winning key defensive face-offs in our zone
-to be a veteran leader for our young talent (such as Kaleta)

Shawn fits with the organization because:
-he exhibits great speed and defensive instincts, the core values of the Buffalo Sabres
-he will be able to compete for the Stanley Cup this spring

The New Jersey Devils offer him a 2 year deal at .900 M
NTC for both seasons
- Chance to play for a cup
- Would be on the third line fighting Brylin for the Centers spot
- Playing will proven vets Mike Modano, Chris Chelios, Marty Broudouer and Jarret Stoll with many more.
- Giving him 2 year security in the organization
- Giving him a NTC

Bates has thought about the offers put forth to him. He realizes that he is getting a bit long in the tooth and may not have much time left in the "show". With that being said, Bates cant turn down the 2 year commitment that New Jersey is making.
